THE MODERN POET

Lemmings

By HH

Lemmings
Pick up a stone, put somebody down. Call it your home, put a fence around. Teach your little boy how to stand his ground. Give him your stone when you lay yours down. King wants land, so he takes your son. Says he’ll come home when the fighting’s done. King gets a field, you get a stone. Your boy’s name, and you walk back home. Lemmings, lemmings. Stand in line. Pick a rich man. Pretend he’s your kind. Lemmings, lemmings. March when they say. They start the war and we all pay. Lem-lem. Lem-lem. Line, line. Stand in line. Lem-lem. Lem-lem. Your kind. Your kind. Boots in the mud, boys in a row. Whistle blows, and over they go. Letter comes home with a government stamp. Next little brother heads off to camp. Lemmings, lemmings. Stand in line. Pick a rich man. Pretend he’s your kind. Lemmings, lemmings. March when they say. They start the war and we all pay. Bombs hit a house on the evening news. Change the channel, there’s more to choose. Turn it down, let the pictures play. Set the alarm for another day. Another day. Another day. Stand in line. Do what they say. Lemmings, lemmings. Stand in line. Pick a rich man. Pretend he’s your kind. Lemmings, lemmings. March when they say. They start the war and we all pay. Lem-lem. Lem-lem. Line, line. Stand in line. Lem-lem. Lem-lem. We all pay. Pick up a stone, put somebody down. Call it your home, put a fence around. Teach your little boy how to stand his ground. Give him your stone when you lay yours down.
