THE MODERN POET

The Ants and the Clock

By HH

The ants all marched in tidy lines, And counted dots and drew their signs. "The numbers fit! The charts are fine! We've measured every grand decline!" They counted red, they counted blue, And counted what they couldn't do. They counted six, then eight, then nine, But couldn't count the cost of time. "The hill is strong!" the captains cried, While half the workers marched outside. They drew a graph, declared it grand— And never saw the sinking sand. The ants all cheered, "We've got control!" As numbers swallowed up the whole. They counted everything in sight— Except the reasons nothing's right.
