THE MODERN POET

The Walrus and the Screens

By HH

The Walrus and the Screens
he spoke of brighter days to come, where hunger fades and hearts grow numb. he smiled through fog — the crowd believed, their pockets light, their hope retrieved. he said, “the shore’s a promised land, bring your shells and lend a hand.” the sea fell silent, smooth, and wide, and all the pearls were trapped inside. they taught the tide to fear the shore, said, “freedom’s work — just earn some more.” they count the shells, they own the floor, the crowd applauds, the rich adore. the sky hums low with static rain, each drop a debt we can’t explain. we build, we trade, we bow, we bend, the system eats — and calls us friend. once upon a promise made, the sea forgot the song it played. a preacher grinned, “forever’s near,” and all the oysters sang to cheer. his smile was salt, his hands were clean, his crown was carved from what had been. and when the sea stopped asking why, the dream began to calcify. he spoke of brighter days ahead, we followed every word he said. the tide withdrew — the truth was his, he smiled and said, “I am the walrus.”
