THE MODERN POET

I Like Money

By HH

I like money. It buys us meat. Pull up a chair. It’s all my treat. I’ll buy the bread. I’ll pour the wine. If I have plenty, we all dine. Earning the stuff is a different affair. The house owns the table. The house owns the chair. The house sets the wager, the hours, the rate, Then charges admission to walk through the gate. My fellow inmates assembled at three To see how much better our prison could be. They shortened the lunch and extended the day, Then thanked all the wardens for letting us stay. One built a lock with a marvelous click. One made the clock run a little more quick. One found a way to make lunch disappear. They named him Employee of the Year. I asked, “Who gets richer?” They said, “Don’t be rude.” So I paid for the drinks and got back to the food. They toasted the house and its wonderful plan. I toasted the cook and the dishwasher man. I like money. I like to eat. I like being able to say, “My treat.” But the house wants my days till I’m ready to drop— Then leaves me the bill, with a tip on the top.
