THE MODERN POET

The Lucky Ones

By HH

I've been thinking about success and how much of it we actually control. We love pointing to the person who started with nothing and became a billionaire. See? Anyone can do it. Well, sure. Someone did. But how many worked just as hard, were just as talented, and never made it? We hear about the winners. Funny how quiet it gets when you ask about everyone else. And before anyone thinks I'm complaining, I'm not. I consider myself incredibly lucky. Look at when and where I was born. Change either one, and my life could've been a very different story. History offers plenty of examples, most of them not particularly pleasant. I didn't choose my century, my country, or the circumstances I was born into. Neither did anyone else. And there's actual research behind this. Where you're born, who raises you, and the opportunities around you have a measurable impact on where you end up. Hard work matters. Perseverance matters. Absolutely. But so does luck. Timing. Randomness. All the things nobody gets to choose. We point to the person who climbed the wall as proof the wall doesn't exist. Funny how that works.
